Solid Horizon doubles down on its Environmental, Social & Governance practices
KLANG (7 July 2021) – Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) has always been a big part of Solid Horizon’s business model, but the company will be focusing extra efforts on the practice to become a more responsible company in Malaysia’s construction industry says James Yeoh, Director of Solid Horizon Sdn Bhd.
ESG are three main factors when measuring a company’s sustainability and ethical impact. It is a term used in capital markets and commonly used by investors to evaluate the behavior of a corporation and as a tool to determine the company’s future financial performance.
According to James, as a construction company in Malaysia, Solid Horizon has a big influence or effect towards the various aspects of the country’s physical and social environment.
“ESG is not just important to Solid Horizon alone, but also to Malaysia’s entire small, medium enterprise (SME) industry, the nation’s built environment and the communities in areas all companies operate in. This is why businesses, whether big or small, need to apply ESG as part of their business model,” he says.
Solid Horizon is a supplier and manufacturer of shipping containers. The company specializes in portable cabins, heavy duty cabins, labor quarter cabins, toilet cabins, guard houses, used containers and polyurethane cabins.
James adds that through the practice of ESG, Solid Horizon can contribute positively to the environment, the social welfare of its employees and become a more transparent & responsible company.
“As one of the many companies operating in Malaysia and impacting both the industry and the environment, we constantly look for solutions to become more sustainable. Thus, we are focusing more efforts on our ESG practices to become a solution instead of a problem,” James says.
For the environmental aspect of ESG, Solid Horizon’s main business modal is repurposing shipping containers.
“Repurposing means recycling the waste that is produced by the logistics industry. We are also promoting the adoption of modular construction to considerably lessen the waste at construction sites and fabrication sites and this is a very good solution for the environment,” he says. “In terms of social, we promote the use of centralized labor quarters (CLQ) as one of the key components to promote the welfare of migrant workers and employees. For governance, we will be looking to adapt proper internal and external auditing for our accounts and make sure that our policy is in accordance with the ISO 9000:1 and ISO 4500:1. We also reduce on electricity consumption by digitalizing our work process to reduce paper as well as put in company-wide efforts to reduce water usage and we also promote the welfare and benefits of our employees,” James adds.
